Tang White Pottery Painted Horses
This is a pair of Tang dynasty white pottery horses, robustly modelled with powerful physiques, vividly capturing the Tang dynasty's admiration for the majesty of fine steeds. Both horses stand on rectangular bases, with arched necks, erect ears, a composed demeanor, and muscular limbs rendered with fluid lines, exuding a strong sense of dynamism.
One horse is painted with red pigments, still faintly visible after a millennium of weathering, particularly on the body and legs. It measures 55.5 cm in height and 57 cm in width. The other is painted in a more understated white pigment, standing slightly taller at 56.5 cm, with the same width of 57 cm. Both surfaces show traces of green and grey mottling, which are burial-related mineral deposits rather than original pigments.
Notably, both horses have perforations at the tail area, originally intended for the attachment of wooden or plant fiber tails, adding realism and a sense of movement. Additionally, both have visible holes or projections atop their heads, suggesting they were once fitted with manes, harnesses, or ornaments made from wood, fiber, or other materials, a typical mixed-material craftsmanship of the period.
Although these ancillary materials have long since perished, the surviving features reveal the Tang artisans’ meticulous attention to detail and decorative elements. The contrasting red and white coloration, combined with lifelike proportions, endows this pair with significant artistic and historical value, exemplifying the sophistication of Tang dynasty ceramic craftsmanship and their unique equine aesthetics.
Dimensions: Red-painted horse: Height 55.5 cm, Width 57 cm; White-painted horse: Height 56.5 cm, Width 57 cm
