This finely potted Yue ware box, provisionally dated to the Five Dynasties period, is of circular form, comprising a shallow cylindrical body and a gently domed, closely fitting cover. The cover is decorated with freely executed radiating incised lines, forming a stylised floral design around a central point.
Covered in a lustrous olive-green celadon glaze, the box displays subtle variations in tone, with deeper concentrations of glaze accentuating the incised decoration. The warm brown edges provide a pleasing contrast to the green-glazed surface.
Produced in Zhejiang province, Yue ware reached a high level of technical and artistic refinement during the late Tang and Five Dynasties periods. Its elegant forms, finely prepared bodies and characteristic green glazes established an enduring tradition in Chinese ceramic production.
The present box reflects the restrained elegance of Yue ceramics, combining a compact, functional form with a lively decorative composition.
