Qing Qianlong Grisaille and Gilt Nativity’ Scene plate
This exquisite Qing dynasty porcelain plate, dating to the Qianlong period (1736–1795), is a superb example of Chinese export porcelain painted in grisaille (墨彩) with delicate gilded highlights. The central scene portrays the Nativity of Christ, a rare and finely executed depiction of Western religious iconography crafted specifically for the European market.
From a very rare series of five depicting scenes from the life of Christ after the illustrations in an early 18th century bible by Amsterdam artist Jan Luyken (1649-1712). Rendered in meticulous linework with selective gilding, the scene features Mary, Joseph, and the infant Christ in the manger, surrounded by shepherds and figures in Chinese attire. This artistic fusion reflects both Christian symbolism and Chinese painting styles. A recumbent ox and donkey complete the tableau, while the rim is adorned with an elegant gilt floral scroll border.
Such pieces exemplify the 18th-century cross-cultural exchanges between East and West, where Chinese porcelain artisans masterfully interpreted Western religious and secular themes for export.
