A Northern Song stoneware bowl produced at one of the Cizhou kilns of Hebei province in northern China. The bowl is formed from a pale grey stoneware body and entirely covered with a white slip, creating the bright, even surface characteristic of Cizhou wares.
Over the slip is a transparent glaze with a very pale honey tone, leaving only the foot and base unglazed. The glaze displays a fine, even network of crackle across the surface, giving the otherwise restrained vessel a subtle textural quality.
The bowl is simply shaped, with a gently rounded profile and low foot, reflecting the practical yet refined character of Northern Song Cizhou production. Its understated white surface allows the quality of the potting and glaze to take prominence.
Measuring 14.25 cm in diameter, the bowl produces a good clear ring when lightly tapped.
