Tang Painted Pottery Earth Spirit (Zhenmushou) 唐 陶加彩虎面鎮墓獸
An imposing and dramatically modelled Tang dynasty pottery figure of an Earth Spirit (Zhenmushou), characterised by its fearsome stance, exaggerated features, and strikingly dynamic form. The creature is portrayed seated on a plinth with its muscular body accentuated by flame-like projections along the back and shoulders. The head is crowned with tall, curling horns, a snarling mouth exposing sharp fangs, and a commanding expression designed to evoke awe and reverence.
Traces of original red, white, and black pigments are still visible, highlighting the vitality and craftsmanship of this extraordinary piece. Such mythical beasts were popular motifs in Tang art, often representing protective guardians believed to ward off evil influences.
This sculpture captures the Tang dynasty's remarkable fusion of imaginative artistry and symbolic significance, exemplifying the dynasty's fascination with the supernatural and cosmological beliefs.
