Han Grey pottery model of a standing pig
This finely modeled Han dynasty pottery pig (206 BCE – 220 CE) is a superb example of ancient Chinese ceramic animal figures, crafted with remarkable attention to form and naturalistic detail. The pig stands sturdily on four legs, with a slightly arched back, curled tail, and expressively rendered snout, capturing the physical characteristics of the domesticated pig, an important symbol of prosperity and abundance in Han culture.
Sculpted in grey earthenware, the surface retains traces of burial patina and mineral deposits, consistent with Han funerary ceramics.
This Han dynasty pottery pig reflects the deep agricultural roots of early China, where pigs symbolised abundance, prosperity, and domestic harmony. The character for “home” (家) even contains the ancient form of “pig” beneath a roof, capturing the belief that a well-kept household begins with sustenance, stability, and the humble presence of a pig.
Measurement : 8.25cm (L) x 16 cm (W)
Provenance : Private Collection from London
