A finely potted Southern Song qingbai porcelain bowl of elegant conical form, rising from a relatively small circular foot. The interior is attractively decorated in relief with a continuous scrolling lotus-blossom design, the flowers and foliage arranged fluidly across the well of the bowl.
The vessel is covered in a delicate pale greenish-blue qingbai glaze, with subtle variations in tone across the surface. A uniform network of fine crackle runs throughout the glaze, adding texture while preserving the light, translucent quality characteristic of qingbai wares. The rim is left unglazed, indicating that the bowl was fired upside down.
At 18.5 cm in diameter, the bowl is of substantial size while retaining the refined proportions and lightness associated with Southern Song porcelain. The restrained form, pale luminous glaze and softly articulated lotus decoration create an especially harmonious and elegant appearance.
Condition: two small chips to the rim edge, one apparently filled with a possible gold-lacquer repair; two short hairlines at the rim; and a fine crack around part of the foot edge, possibly dating from manufacture or cooling. Despite these minor imperfections, the bowl remains a particularly attractive and finely made example of Southern Song qingbai ware.
