Sui Dynasty Equestrian Female Figure Wearing a Veil Hat
Height: 39cm
Provenance: Private Collection from London
This painted terracotta figure depicts a female rider mounted on a horse, wearing a wéimào (帷帽), a tall hat with a flowing veil. Originating from Central Asia, the wéimào became fashionable during the Sui and Tang dynasties, reflecting the dynamic cultural exchanges brought about by the Silk Road.
The rider wears a long robe, and the horse is modeled with a strong, naturalistic stance. Traces of original pigments remain visible on both rider and mount, testifying to the figure’s once vivid polychromy. This sculpture not only illustrates the stylistic elegance of Sui dynasty tomb figures but also highlights the openness of early medieval China to foreign influences in fashion and aesthetics.
The figure is well-proportioned, with a calm and composed posture, embodying both technical skill and artistic expression. It serves as a vivid testament to the cosmopolitanism of the Sui era.
