Yuan Dynasty Terracotta Figure of an Attendant
This impressive Yuan dynasty terracotta figure (1271–1368 CE) depicts a standing male attendant rendered in a naturalistic posture, with one arm extended as if in mid-gesture. Sculpted in grey earthenware, the figure is dressed in a belted robe with wide sleeves and pleated skirt, fastened in the traditional cross-collar fashion. He wears boots and stands firmly on a rectangular base, projecting a sense of readiness and service.
The attendant's facial features are delicately modelled, with a slight smile and upward gaze that lend him a lifelike presence. His hair is styled with a side knot typical of the Yuan period, a detail often associated with Central Asian or steppe influences, reflecting the multicultural character of the Mongol-led Yuan dynasty.
Such figures were crafted with refined attention to gesture and clothing detail, illustrating the Yuan court’s fascination with realism and cultural diversity. This piece, in excellent condition with minor age-related wear, offers insight into the daily life and ceremonial practices of the era.
Provenance: Private Collection, London
Measurement: Height 30cm x Width 4cm
